Directions to Clinton High School
200 West Boylston St. , Clinton , MA 01510
From Worcester and Points South
Take Rt. 290 to Rt. 190 North to Exit 4, Rt. 12 North. Turn left towards West Boylston. Follow Rt. 12 North past the reservoir and bear right onto Rt. 110 towards Clinton . Follow Rt. 110 East for approx. 5 miles. Clinton High School will be on your right.
At times you may feel lost in the woods, don't be afraid, stay with the directions.
From the Northwest
Take Rt. 2 East to Rt. 190 South to Exit 6 - Rt. 12. Take a left at the end of the ramp. Take first left onto Rt. 62 - Clinton. Follow to the end. Take left onto Rt. 26. Follow for 1.6 miles. Just before the railroad crossing turn right into South Meadow Rd. Follow for 1.5 miles to the end. Turn left. Clinton High School is on the right.
From Boston and Points East
Take the Mass. Pike West to 495 North. Take Exit 26 off 495 North - Rt. 62 West to Clinton . Continue to follow Rt. 62 West to the intersection of Rte. 62 and Rte. 70. You will be at a railroad crossing, continue straight across to Rt. 70. Follow this road to the end. Take a right onto Rt. 70 North - at times you may feel lost in the woods, don't be afraid, stay with the directions. Follow into Clinton . At the top of the hill there will be a Getty Station on the left, stay to the right at the fork. Take first left and continue on Rt. 70 to the end. Take left onto Rte. 110 West. Clinton High School is approximately 1.5 miles on left.

UNDERSTANDING CULTURAL DIFFERENCES - A Student Panel Discussion in a Double Session

Presenters: Lutheran Community Services Staff & Students
Listen to perspectives of students and staff from diverse countries such as Somalia , Liberia , Iraq , Nepal , and Tanzania Refugee Camps (Burundian) as they discuss their backgrounds, their learning needs and their countries' educational systems and expectations. Explore together cultural differences and how they impact teaching and learning in our ABE programs.
This is a double session workshop. All participants must also register for Workshop # 8 in Session II.
COMPUTER LAB CAN BE FUN - ESOL Teachers
Presenter: Laura Horn, Quinsigamond Community College Adult Community Learning Center and QCC at Assabet
Do you dread going to the computer lab because you don't know what to do with your students or you don't feel as if you accomplished anything? Learn how to create a computer lab session using Internet resources. The examples will be for low-level classes but the process and resources can be used for all levels.
Requirement: MUST have good computer skills and be able to navigate the Internet.
A NEW TWIST ON MATH - Pre-GED and GED Teachers
Presenter: Cathy Coleman, Quinsigamond Community College Adult Community Learning Center and QCC GED
Online Program
Model what we want our students to be able to do: to develop the ability to reason, to problem solve and to communicate mathematically. This workshop will emphasize techniques for doing just that and will involve a hands-on algebra lesson from the EMPOWER Math Series.
WHAT DO ADULT SECONDARY EDUCATION LEARNERS NEED AND WANT FROM US?
A Student Panel Presentation in a Double Session
Presenters: Students from Webster Adult Basic Education and Training Resources of America and facilitated by staff of these programs
Learn from ABE-GED students about their educational barriers and challenges they have faced as they've navigated the K-12 and ABE systems. Hear about supports suggested by students to help them persist in their studies to reach their goals.
This is a double session workshop. All participants must also register for Workshop # 14 In Session II.
WRITING TO LEARN IN AN ESOL CLASSROOM - ESOL Teachers
Presenter: Dam Nguyen, Worcester Adult Learning Center
Use writing as a means to develop confidence, demonstrate learning, and encourage reflection and critical thinking
skills. Through a reading, break-out discussion and sample activity, see how to identify best practices in writing that
are student-centered and that build their skills incrementally.
TRANSITION PROGRAMS IN MASSACHUSETTS
Presenter: Kirsten Daigneault, Future Focus Program at Quinsigamond Community College
Gain an overview of transition programs in Massachusetts , what they do and for whom they are appropriate. Find out what they have in common with ABE programs and how your program can coordinate with transitions programs such as through documentation with SMARTT.
WHAT WORKS IN A BEGINNING ESOL CLASS - A Sharing Group for SPLs 0-3 - ESOL Teachers
Presenter: Anne Burke, Quinsigamond Community College Adult Community Learning Center
Come prepared to share one of your favorite methods or activities involving speaking (pronunciation), listening, reading, and writing that works well in your beginning class. Bring all materials needed to demonstrate your activity. The facilitator, who has 20+ years of low-level ESOL teaching, will present an ESOL activity and related materials as well.

9. WANT ADS, EGG CARTONS, AND IMAGINATION - ABE and Pre-GED Teachers
Presenter: Marsha Sunshine Norwood , Webster Adult Basic Education
Use easily accessible materials to practice hands-on classroom activities that can be modified for various classroom situations. Newspapers, for instance, provide a wealth of articles, photos, cartoons, graphs and ads. Bring your ideas to share as well.
WHAT CAN BE FREE FOR OUR NON-PROFIT EDUCATION PROGRAMS?
Presenter: Elaine Weymouth, Clinton Adult Learning Center
Acquire an overview of what resources to find for free for non-profit education programs, and be guided through methods and techniques used to make requests properly from major companies.
ESOL SPL 0-3 IN MOTION - THE SEQUEL - ESOL Teachers
Presenter: Laura Horn, Quinsigamond Community College at Assabet
Grab a teacher-tested, student-approved activity or gain an idea of how to change a well-used one. This workshop was very popular last year and includes new activities, as well as some that were presented previously.
USE YOUR NOODLE - CHECK OUT MOODLE
Presenter: Cathy Coleman, Quinsigamond Community College Adult Community Learning Center and QCC GED Online Program
Become aware of a tool that can help students stay on track even when they can't come to class. This workshop will introduce participants to Moodle, a free e-learning platform that enables remote web-based learning and supplements traditional classroom learning. Even non-technical teachers can set up a website where students can access class information and assignments, interact, share and teach others. Uses of Moodle will be demonstrated including online assignments, forums, journals, quizzes, surveys and chat rooms.
USE THE BENCHMARKS IN ESOL LESSON PLANNING - ESOL Teachers
Presenter: Linda Gosselin, Quinsigamond Community College Adult Community Learning Center and Clinton Adult Learning Center
Receive an overview of the ESOL Framework with particular attention given to the Benchmarks and their purpose. Two strategies for the use of the Benchmarks will be shared and teams of participants will use them to develop lessons. They will then share the lessons they developed and discuss their thoughts on the experience.

15. THE ACCUPLACER COMPUTER PLACEMENT TEST
Presenter: Kirsten Daigneault, Future Focus Program at Quinsigamond Community College
Discern the importance of the accuplacer and how its score affects financial aid and courses students may be required to take. Understand barriers that learners might encounter going to this next step, including doing homework, and how your ABE program can help.
