The English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards for Adult Education, released by OCTAE in October 2016, were written to ensure that adult English Language Learners receive the focused and effective instruction they need to access states’ academic content standards.

To that end, the ELP Standards strongly emphasize the academic language needed by ELLs to engage with and meet state-adopted content standards. Massachusetts is currently in the process of determining recommendations and policies regarding how the ELP Standards will be used by ESOL practitioners in the state.
