Chapter 1 of Understanding by Design, by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe, neatly summarizes the backward design approach to instructional planning and examines each of its three components:

  • Identifying desired results
  • Determining acceptable evidence
  • Planning learning experiences and activities

This summary is worth reading if you are involved in curriculum development, unit planning, or writing lesson plans. It will also help prepare you for any of the SABES workshops that apply this approach to curriculum and instructional design.
