Overview

This workshop is designed for teachers new to teaching basic literacy to English language learners, i.e., those learners with little or no first-language literacy. Two face-to-face sessions and online discussions provide participants with effective instructional and assessment strategies and approaches, with a focus on evidence-based reading and writing instruction.

Description

This two-session blended workshop is an introduction to teaching basic literacy to ELLs with an emphasis on effective instructional and assessment strategies and methods for teaching reading and writing. Between the two sessions, you will try out these strategies with your students and receive peer and facilitator support through an online platform.

Total PD hours: 9–10 hours (two 3-hour face-to-face sessions, plus 3–4 hours of classroom practice and online discussion)

PDPs are available upon request and with completion of all three components and a final project, to be determined by the presenter, participant, and ESOL PD Center director.

    Learning Objectives

    Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Describe common characteristics of ELL low-literacy adults as they relate to learning and teaching
  • Experience and practice research-grounded teaching methodologies such as Language Experience Approach, Whole-Part-Whole, and phonics-based instruction
  • Use strength-based approaches in placement and formative assessments
  • Practice techniques to differentiate instruction to meet diverse student needs
  • Create effective and engaging learning experience for low-literacy adult ELLs
