    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • All English language teachers seeking to expand their teaching to include promising practices for civics instruction
Description

Teaching civics, whether in a general ESOL class, a broadly focused integrated English Literacy and Civic Education (IELCE) class, or a narrowly focused citizenship test prep class, can present special challenges for ESOL teachers. In this workshop, you will learn a range of instructional topics suitable for all of these settings. The instructor offers promising practices in civics education, including tips and strategies to help you design engaging activities that bring life to abstract concepts and to ensure that the content is accessible and meaningful to all students, even those at the lowest levels of proficiency. You will then work in small groups to refine your lessons and plan how to apply the strategies in your classroom setting.

  • Identify civics topics suitable for general ESOL, IELCE, and citizenship test preparation classes
