Overview

In this session conducted through Zoom, you will learn some practical ways to use Google Docs (part of the Google Suite) for remote ESOL instruction, whether it is to lead a class, small group, or one-on-one tutoring. We will discuss basic features for Google Docs, for example creating folders, creating documents from templates or scratch, and setting, modifying, and editing privileges, and how to instruct English learners on the use of these tools.   

NOTES: 

  • You will need to have access to a Gmail account for this training. If you do not currently have a Google account you can created one for free (https://www.google.com).
  • Although Zoom is mobile friendly, you will greatly enhance your experience by participating on a laptop or desktop computer.

Please note: You will access Zoom and other support materials via Blackboard. You cannot access the online course from the SABES website. You will receive a separate email from Joanne Harrington at Quinsigamond Community College with instructions on how to access the Blackboard course and the Zoom session.

  • Teachers of adult ESOL learners of any level

During our 90-minute session, we will explore some of the most useful features of Google Docs for synchronous and asynchronous remote ESOL instruction:

  • Creating class folders in Google Drive  
  • Accessing the Google Drives blank document - Template Gallery options
  • Creating documents from scratch or from a template
  • Set/modify editing privileges (sharing)
  • Using the Comments feature
  • Using screen shots for instructional purposes
    Learning Objectives

    Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Create and share class folders (Google Drive) and documents (Google Docs) with ESOL students of all levels
  • Interact with ESOL students and collaborators by using the Comments and Chat features within Google Docs (synchronous or asynchronous teaching)
