Overview

This workshop will show you how to set up and integrate tablets in an ESOL classroom to build digital literacy while enhancing your students' language and college and career readiness skills.

    Audience

    This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ESOL teachers and assistants, tutors, literacy educators and technology coordinators and those who train them.
Description

The first session is 3 hours face-to-face. The first hour will be aimed at absolute beginners and will cover the basics of setting up a tablet and how to introduce it to your students as well as to colleagues. (Those interested in sharing approaches for introducing students to tablets are welcome!) After, we'll explore an assortment of apps and websites to integrate activities into your curriculum.

After the workshop, you'll have three weeks with the support of the group and facilitator via an online discussion forum to prepare and use your ideas with your students.

In the second required session webinar, you will share what you implemented, what went well, and what you would do differently.

Tablets will be available to use at the first session.  Bring your own device (BYOD) if you have a tablet at your program to use.  Android or Apple preferred, but any type is welcome. Access to a tablet(s) to implement the lesson with your student(s) is required.

The training is 5 PD hours:

  • 3-hour face-to-face workshop
  • 1-hour online discussion - participation in this online share is required
  • 1-hour webinar on February 3, 2017, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. is required.

In addition to the 5 hours of training activities above, you will also be required to plan and implement an activity

CCR Standard anchor standards addressed:

  • Writing anchor 6: Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and to interact and collaborate with others.

  • Writing anchor 8: Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, assess the credibility and accuracy of each source, and integrate the information while avoiding plagiarism.

  • Reading anchor 7: Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse media and formats, including visually and quantitatively, as well as in words.

    Learning Objectives

    Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Access and implement six tablet app tools covered in this workshop using a tablet
  • Create and implement a lesson plan integrating tablets to address a language and/or a CCR standard
  • Enhance a language lesson with an app that targets language development and college and career readiness

Prerequisites
  • Know how to turn on a tablet, and any passwords necessary to log on
  • If possible, have the administrator or other logon permission to download apps onto the tablet. (All resources covered are available via websites, so full participation in the workshop is possible without this.)
