This professional development activity/course is designed for:
In this practical multi-part training, develop at least one complete unit plan as part of your program's overall curriculum. The unit-planning process will involve the following:
- Distinguishing among and constructing the unit purpose, unit goal(s), and unit objectives
- Identifying relevant standards from the reading, writing, speaking/listening, and language strands
- Selecting texts
- Incorporating sequenced, scaffolded, and standards-based skill instruction
- Including meaningful formative and summative assessments
In order to design an integrated ELA unit, complete all three components:
- Part 1: Face-to-face session on May 16 in Lawrence (5.5 hours)
- Part 2: Complete/refine draft unit plans (3 hours)
- Part 3: Webinar date TBD (1.5 hours)
PDPs may be earned by successfully completing all three components plus an additional final project to be arranged with the presenter.
- Write effective unit goal statements and unit purpose statements
- Integrate the four strands of the CCR Standards for ELA (reading, writing, speaking/listening, and language) into unit instruction
- Incorporate appropriately complex texts
- Provide opportunities for explicit instruction and embedded skill learning
- Sequence instruction with attention to the scaffolding of learning
- Use formative and summative assessments to inform instruction
