Overview: 

This three-part workshop explores ESOL instructional practices that maximize learner interaction and communication at all levels of language proficiency. The series includes a face-to-face session, an online companion course, and a follow-up webinar. Through participating in all three components, you will have opportunities to try out new teaching tools and techniques in your practice and receive professional development support while doing so.

This workshop is one of six based on the MA Professional Standards for Teachers of Adult ESOL.

Audience: 

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • Novice and experienced ESOL teachers interested in expanding their repertoire of communicative classroom activities and classroom management techniques
Description: 

This workshop explores ESOL instructional approaches that maximize learner interaction and communication, foster language development, and prepare learners for their next steps beyond the ESOL classroom. You will practice with a variety of strategies and techniques, such as:

  • Building from a controlled, structured practice to more independent authentic language use
  • Facilitating small group work that cultivates a cooperative learning environment
  • Managing a multilevel class

Following the face-to-face workshop, you will apply some of these strategies and techniques to your teaching practice and will reflect on your experiences by contributing to an online companion course. The companion course will be facilitated by the workshop presenter, who will support you in applying what you have learned.

During the final webinar (about six to eight weeks after the workshop), you will share with one another your challenges and successes in applying new strategies and techniques to your teaching practice, further refine your practice, receive guidance and information from the facilitator, and plan your next steps.

Dates and times:

  • Part 1: Face-to-face session: 5/6/2017 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Part 2: Practice and online participation: 5/7/2017–6/17/2017
  • Part 3: Webinar: 6/17/2017 from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m.

To receive credit for this professional development activity, participation in all three components is required.

Professional development hours: 8

  • Face-to-face session: 5.5 hours
  • Participation in the online companion course: 1.5 hours
  • Follow-up webinar: 1 hour

An additional time commitment of approximately 2 hours is expected for the application of learning into your teaching practice.

Learning Objectives: 

Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Plan language learning activities that build from a controlled, structured practice to communicative and real-life application
  • Use scaffolding techniques to increase learner autonomy, reinforce language skills, and build confidence
  • Identify and select grouping strategies (i.e., individual, pair, or small group) that are appropriate for the level and objectives of the lesson
  • Implement classroom management techniques that articulate expectations for classroom behavior and address lesson pacing, multilevel needs, and problem solving
