This professional development activity/course is designed for:
Both the current shifts in standards and the revised high school equivalence tests require students to cite evidence from texts to support their claims when writing constructed responses. In this session, you will explore strategies for helping your students master the steps involved in writing argument responses, including close reading of text, writing strong claims, and citing textual evidence in support of those claims. You will also learn how to help students generate their own questions about a text to lay the foundation for constructing effective responses.
After the full-day face-to-face session, you will be asked to post the following to an online site:
- The strategy (or strategies) from this session that you tried with your students
- Your successes with the strategy (or strategies)
- Any challenges you faced
- Any questions you still have
- Distinguish between text-dependent and non-text-dependent essay prompts
- Describe the process for teaching students to construct an argument response, including writing a strong claim
- Discuss the use of evidence to support claims (CCRSAE-ELA Shift #2)
- Encourage students to generate their own questions to guide them through each step of writing the argument response
