The Internet and the anonymity it affords can give online scammers, hackers, and identity thieves access to your students' computers, personal information, finances, and more. Help your students know how to fasten their seatbelts before deciding to venture online or to at least take these precautions to ensure a safe trip.

Description: 

Internet safety is about securing yourself against cyber criminals, snoops, and creeps, as well as viruses, scams, phishing attacks, and general Internet mayhem. What can your students do to ensure that their information and privacy are safe and secure, and that their computers stay virus-free? This self-paced online course will inform you of the steps to take to protect yourself while online.

This course is 5 professional development hours, including assignments.

  • Writing anchor 8: Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, assess the credibility and accuracy of each source, and integrate the information while avoiding plagiarism.
  • Reading anchor 7: Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse media and formats, including visually and quantitatively, as well as in words.

Learning Objectives: 

Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Describe three dangers of the Internet that could compromise the safety of your students
  • Teach students how to change their online privacy settings to be safer online
  • Recognize and avoid three online "traps" that may compromise safety and personal information
  • Develop a strategy with at least three steps to properly deal with privacy-related issues
