Overview:

Increase rigor in your classroom and provide students with the language skills they need to accomplish more complex tasks in your subject area. From articulating clear learning objectives to designing your lessons to achieve them, you can support students in developing strong academic skills, thus increasing their abilities to succeed in careers and life-long learning.

Audience:

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ELA teachers and content-area teachers (i.e. workforce education, science, social studies)
Description:

Through a focus on building academic language use in class, we will examine the demands of academic language and the skills that students need to be explicitly taught to meet these demands. We will review the components of academic language, practice identifying the language demands of adult texts, and discuss the academic language skills required to complete a standards-based task. You will learn how to write concrete and precise learning objectives that call attention to both language function and form.

You will earn 10 hours of professional development time in this offering:

  • 2 hours of pre-work
  • 5 hours of face-to-face work
  • 3 hours of post-work

To earn PDPs, you must successfully complete all of the above components plus an additional project.
