Overview

This 3-day, 10-hour course, 9 hours face-to-face with one hour of follow-up, is required of all teaching staff new to ABE. During this course, practitioners will explore many facets of teaching in adult education programs funded by DESE such as: who are our adult learners and what are their goals and challenges, how to foster a critically reflective practice, effective teaching approaches, and adult learning theories. We will also review the five elements of lesson planning required by ACLS, including how to write learning objectives that align with the CCRSAE and MA ESOL Curriculum Frameworks, planning for a variety of classroom activities and teaching strategies, and incorporating a variety of assessments. Day 2 is December 2 and Day 3 is December 9. Attendance at all days is required. Must have successfully completed the online course "Overview of the ABE Field” to register for this course.

Description

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) requires all teaching staff in an ESE-funded ABE program to complete the SABES Foundations for New Staff: The Art of Teaching course in the first 12 months of employment. Teaching staff do not need to take this course if they were previously employed at an ESE-funded ABE program and already possess a Certificate of Completion from the Foundation’s course or from its' predecessor, the New Staff Orientation.

After you register for this course, you will receive a reading assignment and pre-self-assessment via email to be completed prior to the first day of the course. During the course, you will develop a sample lesson plan which incorporates the ideas and components that are explored throughout the course. You will have the opportunity to share your classroom experience with colleagues, and discuss critical aspects of teaching in the ABE/ESOL classroom. At the end of the course, you will complete an evaluation and post-self-assessment.

    Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Use self-assessment and self-reflection to strengthen your teaching practice and student achievement
  • Summarize the main tenets of at least one adult development and one adult learning theory and give examples of how that theory can improve classroom practice
  • Explain how using the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education and the Massachusetts ABE ESOL Curriculum Frameworks informs your teaching practice to increase academic rigor to ensure that ABE students are prepared for the demands of their next steps
  • Demonstrate how to use the CCRSAE and MA ESOL Frameworks standards and benchmarks in order to plan, implement and assess unit based instruction
  • Explain how lesson/unit planning supports the CCRSAE and ESOL frameworks and develop examples tied to college and career readiness for each six components of a lesson plan

Prerequisites

Must have successfully completed the online course "Overview of the ABE Field” to register for this course. A new session of Overview of the ABE Field begins the first of every month.
