Overview: 

Part of learning a new language is learning how to talk about math. Unfortunately, math has traditionally not been a regular part of adult ESOL instruction and many ESOL teachers are not comfortable teaching it. This self-paced, moderated online course is the first in a series for ESOL teachers who would like to deepen their understanding of math and learn how to integrate math and numeracy skills in their ESOL classrooms.

Audience: 

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • Any ESOL instructor interested in integrating math into his or her language acquisition classroom. No prior math background is needed.
Description: 

Mathematizing ESOL I provides conceptual understanding of math topics around whole numbers, including cultural differences in procedures and notation, and offers strategies for making math accessible to all levels of ESOL students. Each lesson contains several math practice activities, discussion questions, video clips, and lesson ideas. During the course, you will be asked to:

  • Carefully review course content and related documents and videos
  • Complete and submit math activities
  • Respond to discussion questions
  • Read the responses of other participants

Upon successful completion of the course, all participants will receive a certificate of completion.

OPTIONAL: Participants may earn 18 PDPs by completing a culminating project: the creation (with the guide of a rubric) of a lesson plan for ESOL students that integrates math and incorporates the key elements of each lesson in this course.  Complete requirement details for earning PDPs are available from the facilitator(s).

This course runs over 6 weeks. The estimated time to complete the course is 18 hours  (not including the optional final project).

Learning Objectives: 

Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Compare and contrast math notation in the United States and other countries
  • Describe key elements of effective planning for math integration
  • Articulate the different meanings of subtraction and division
  • Perform basic operations using U.S. and European algorithms
  • Scaffold vocabulary needed for teaching related operations with whole numbers for ESOL learners
  • Reflect on your own teaching vis-à-vis integrating math operations using whole numbers
