Overview

This session builds on the concepts and skills presented in Enhancing Student Motivation, Part 1. You will delve more deeply into the individual Motivational Interviewing (MI) skills of Open Questions, Affirmations, Reflections, and Summaries (OARS) and the use of reflections and summaries to direct the conversation toward students’ motivation. During the session, you will have the opportunity to practice and experiment with reflections and summaries and MI-based feedback (i.e., MI coaching).

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • Those who attended either session of Enhancing Student Motivation, Part 1 (June 5 in Devens or October 13 in Boston). See Prerequisites, below.
Description

MI is a form of empathic dialogue for strengthening a person’s motivation and commitment to change. It is designed to strengthen motivation for movement toward a specific goal by eliciting and exploring a person’s reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion. This well-researched tool is proven to increase the motivation and persistence of people who are struggling to set and achieve their goals.

Enhancing Student Motivation, Part 2, enables you to further develop your understanding of MI principles and to practice integrating your MI skills at a deeper level.

Prerequisites: In order to attend Enhancing Student Motivation, Part 2, you must attend a session of Enhancing Student Motivation, Part 1 (June 5 in Devens or October 13 in Boston).

Note: If you attended the June 5 session in Devens and register for Part 2, we will email you a mini-presentation and a brief article so you may review the MI concepts in advance of the session. The review packet will take 30–60 minutes of your time.
