This online blended workshop focuses on four elements of vocabulary instruction and how to incorporate them into your ESOL teaching practice, with a focus on practical applications for in-person and online classrooms.

In this online blended workshop, you will explore the four key elements essential to vocabulary instruction and learning in the ESOL classroom. These elements, identified through research by the Center for Applied Linguistics, are word consciousness; selective, targeted instruction; vocabulary-building strategies; and metalinguistic awareness. Through experiential activities, you will analyze how students learn new words in English. You will learn how to identify words for instruction and how to design and deliver effective vocabulary practice activities for both in-person and online classes, as well as how to integrate vocabulary instruction into your ESOL unit and lesson planning.

  • Module 2: Virtual workshop on Zoom  (3/31/25, 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.)
  • Module 3: Independent activities in Canvas  (3/31 – 4/7/25)
  • Module 4: Virtual workshop on Zoom  (4/7/25, 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.)
