Many immigrants would rather work for themselves than be someone else's employee. Some may have owned a business in their home country. But self-employment for English language learners involves many considerations: language skills, cultural awareness, ease using computers, and knowledge of basic business and legal issues.

This workshop will help you develop a thematic unit on entrepreneurism that integrates all these factors. You will have opportunities to try out new teaching tools and techniques in your practice while receiving professional-development support.

The course components include:

• A face-to-face, hands-on session (3 hours): Discuss topics such as licensing, financing, and marketing, then develop lessons that integrate language and digital literacy skills
• An online facilitated discussion forum (2 hours total): Explore additional resources, exchange ideas, and get support adapting or developing an activity to try out with your learners
• A facilitated webinar (1 hour): Share updates and lessons learned, and plan next steps
• Application to your teaching practice (2 hours)

To receive credit, you must participate in all components. Total PD hours: 8
