This six-hour workshop (five hours face-to-face plus one hour of follow up) explores ESOL instructional designs that maximize learner interaction and communication. It is one of six workshops developed to support novice and experienced ESOL teachers in gaining proficiency in and mastery of the MA Professional Standards for Teachers of Adult ESOL. Follow up support will be provided in an online community of practice, designed to support teachers in their application of learning.
This workshop explores ESOL instructional designs that maximize learner interaction and communication through classroom activities that build from controlled, structured practice to more independent communicative language use. Participants practice with a variety of strategies and tools to design and facilitate group and pair work activities that foster a cooperative learning environment, even within a multilevel class.

Plan language learning activities that build from controlled, structured practice to communicative and real-life application
Use scaffolding techniques to increase learner autonomy, reinforce language skills, and build confidence
Identify and select grouping strategies (i.e., individual, pair, or small group) that are appropriate for the level and objectives of the lesson
Implement classroom management techniques that articulate expectations for classroom behavior and address lesson pacing, multilevel needs, and problem solving
