Concurrent and contextualized instruction is a critical IET/IELCE component that requires a basic skills or English language instructor to align lessons and integrate instruction with an occupational skills instructor. This workshop will provide hands-on activities to help practitioners plan and develop contextualized basic skills and ESOL and workforce preparation activities that are aligned with the occupational skills curriculum of the IET/IELCE. The focus of this session responds to the PD needs identified from a recent survey of current IET/IELCE program directors.
- IET/IELCE program directors and instructors who attended either or both: IET Tips and Tools for Success 4/10/18 and/or IET/IELCE: Connecting the Dots with Employers and Workforce Partners, 5/14/19
- Occupational skills training partners may attend with your team, even if they haven’t attended one of the prerequisite sessions
This professional development activity/course is designed for:
A requirement of IET/IELCE programming is to provide basic skills or English language and workforce preparation instruction contextually and concurrently. Basic skills and ESOL instructors must plan instruction that is aligned with the academic and language skills needed for the occupational skills component of the IET/IELCE. Instructors will explore resources and tools that facilitate planning and development of the IET components. Opportunities to practice contextualizing lessons will be provided and instructors will develop activities that can be used in their IET/IELCE programs. We invite adult education and occupational skills instructors to participate as teams.
- Use a process for developing contextualized lessons and activities for an IET/IELCE
- Develop lessons and activities for the basic skills, ESOL, or workforce preparation component of the IET/IELCE
- Develop a single set of learning objectives
- Create activities to use in the classroom
