In this workshop, you will learn about an advising curriculum for varied-level, in-class Education and Career Planning workshops that has been successfully implemented at the Immigrant Learning Center (ILC). You will learn how ILC advisors structure their job duties and curriculum and track and record students’ goals and achievements. You will also have an opportunity to reflect and explore how you might use Education and Career Planning workshops in your program.

Whether you already have a formal advising curriculum at your organization or you are in the planning stages, there are several things to consider in order to help your students reach their goals. ILC has developed an advising curriculum that incorporates Education and Career Planning push-in visits, administrative procedures for tracking and recording students’ goals, and effective communication strategies to actively involve students, advisors, and teachers. ILC presenters will share examples of each aspect of ILC’s advising curriculum:
- designing multi-leveled lesson plans for push-in visits
- scheduling push-in visits with teachers
- setting up one-on-one meetings with students
- helping students research career and education opportunities
- assisting students with setting education and career goals
- documenting student progress towards their goals
