This half-day face-to-face workshop provides an overview of the integration of family literacy themes in the adult ESOL classroom, with an emphasis on helping parents support children's learning. It includes a face-to-face session, and follow-up emails with the instructor.

Using English for New Bostonians' 100% free ESOL for Parents and Caregivers Curriculum as a guide, this workshop examines the integration of family literacy themes into the adult ESOL classroom, particularly classrooms serving immigrant parents and caregivers. These themes include parents as the primary teachers of their children, navigating the U.S. school system, understanding report cards and the importance of parent/teacher conferences, going to college, and understanding how best to support children's learning. While some ELs in adult classrooms are not parents, many are or will be in the future. Others may be relatives who play a signature role in caring for children and helping them succeed in school. In this workshop, you will be given a variety of lesson ideas and materials that can be easily adapted for use in any ESOL classroom or parenting group.
The workshop presents and models sections of the ESOL for Parents and Caregivers Curriculum, plus the new Companion Guide, for parents of students grade 7-12, developed by the presenter for English for New Bostonians, and includes ample time for you to try out some of the lessons. You are then encouraged to continue exploring the Curriculum, practicing lessons in your classroom. The facilitator will reach out to all participants by email to provide support and answer any follow-up questions. In addition, participants will be invited to participate in a quarterly Community of Practice convening.

- Face-to-face session: 3 hours
- An additional time commitment of approximately 2 hours is expected for the application of learning to your teaching practice

- Explain the importance of incorporating family literacy themes into your curriculum
- Use a number of activities, lessons, and strategies in your classroom related to family literacy
- Develop additional lessons that teach skills being addressed, using widely available school and parenting related materials
- Seek out funds for Parent ESOL classes
