    Audience

    This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ELA teachers at all GLE levels
  • ABE content teachers (science, social studies, workforce prep, etc.)
Description

What role should interviewing, debating, and even listening to podcasts play in the adult education classroom? A big one! So should engaging students in collaborative discussions and formal and informal presentations. Activities like these build important speaking and listening skills that serve adults well in the twenty-first century; however, many ABE teachers struggle to find time to teach these skills. Explore how to efficiently and effectively integrate instruction in speaking and listening with other instructional goals. The CCRSAE Speaking and Listening standards will be used as a guide.

    Learning Objectives

    Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the research-based connections among speaking, listening, reading, and writing
  • Design speaking and listening tasks appropriate for targeted CCRSAE levels and connected to reading and/or writing activities
  • Provide effective feedback to students on the development of their speaking and listening skills
