As the launch of the 2020 Census coincides with the need for most adult educators to teach remotely, the Program Support PD Center is pleased to offer this online workshop, adapted from the one originally planned for the MCAE Network Conference.
In addition to information about the importance of the census for our communities, you will learn how to access free PDFs of lesson packets for multi-level learners that teach about how the census is a key civics opportunity, how to fill out the census, what laws protect your privacy, how to avoid scams, and how to take information about the census back to families, neighborhoods and communities.
Given that classes are suspended due to the Coronavirus, the facilitator will share three strategies for helping students continue their learning remotely:
- Real-time Zoom meetings and/or Google Hangouts,
- Independent study that students can do online, and
- Hard-copy handouts that the students can work on independently at home
Unable to attend? We will record this webinar. If you are interested in this topic but cannot attend the live webinar, you may register and receive the webinar recording to review along with the instructions for the follow-up assignment, which may be completed by April 14 for additional PD hours.

Schedule:
- March 31, 2020: Join the webinar live from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. If you cannot join the live webinar, register for this PD event and we will send you the recording.
- April 14, 2020: Following the webinar or viewing of the recording, your assignment will be to submit a brief posting describing one idea you come away with that you will consider for implementation with students at your program.
The total time for this PD activity is approximately 2 hours. We estimate the time as follows:
- Participation in the webinar or viewing the recording: 90 minutes
- Assignment: 30 minutes if completed

Explain and teach three main reasons why the census matters to our communities

Identify three College and Career Readiness skills (adding vocabulary, adding knowledge, and reading for evidence) that can be taught in the context of the census

Access three options (including using The Change Agent’s online audio -- available for free to state-funded programs in Mass.) to teach this content for teaching about the census remotely

Invite students to be Census Ambassadors, take the National Coalition for Literacy’s “Pledge to Be Counted”, and be eligible for prize money!
