This professional development activity/course is designed for:
Participants will get hands-on practice with several free online readability formulas. This will be followed by a discussion of how to interpret readability results and additional factors that contribute to text difficulty. Finally, the facilitator will present tips on how to use readability to choose appropriate levels of texts for different instructional purposes, such as guided reading, introducing new content, and independent reading.
- explain the importance of readability in the College and Career Readiness Standards in Adult Education (CCRSAE)
- enter texts into several online readability formulas
- interpret readability results beyond simple Grade Level Equivalents (GLEs)
- explain what factors, in addition to readability, contribute to text difficulty
- use readability to choose different levels of texts for different instructional purposes
