Overview

In this course, learn how to teach Close Reading, which productively engages learners to dig into texts for deeper understanding. Close Reading can be extremely engaging, productive and confidence-boosting for struggling and experienced readers alike.

Please note: This online course will take place in Blackboard  and via Zoom. It cannot be accessed from the SABES website. You will receive a separate email from Joanne Harrington at Quinsigamond Community College with instructions on how to access the course.

    This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ELA and content area teachers who want to help their students deeply engage with text
  • ELA and content area teachers at any level of general experience who wish to learn Close Reading techniques and explore Text-Dependent Questions
Description

How do we fulfill the expectations of the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education (CCRSAE) with struggling readers, advanced readers and everyone in-between? Close Reading is part of the answer.

Reading Anchor One of the CCRSAE states: "Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text."

Over the course of 8 PD hours, you will watch six asynchronous video presentations, reflect in a discussion forum, and participate in two live online meetings to discuss the strategies and content.

The course will open on May 15th.

The two virtual live sessions will take place:

  • June 5th:  1:00-2:00 p.m.
  • June 26th: 1:00-2:00 p.m.
    Learning Objectives

    Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Learn the close reading process and text-dependent questioning as aligned in the standards
  • Experience a close reading lesson with understanding to classroom applications
  • Learn strategies for helping students gather evidence, knowledge and insight from what they read
  • Integrate appropriate scaffolds to enable all students to access complex text
  • Learn to write text-dependent questions for both narrative and expository genres, and how to provide students with entry-points through discourse, visual media, and annotation
  • Plan to apply close reading strategies and text-dependent questioning into upcoming lessons
