In these online interactive sessions, you will explore resources and develop skills for developing career-focused instruction that meets English, literacy and numeracy goals. Under the guidance of contextualization expert and CareerKits developer Ellen Baxt, you will identify and adapt existing resources to meet learner’s career interests and academic needs. This session will combine an initial webinar, the completion of an exploration and planning activity, and a final debrief and sharing meeting.

When classes use career contextualized adult literacy materials, students are exposed to a wide variety of career information while making progress toward their reading, writing, speaking, listening, critical thinking and math goals. In this online session, you will develop strategies and plans for creating and implementing career-focused instruction that meets diverse academic learning goals. Among other resources, you will explore and identify activities to use from the NYSED/CUNY CareerKits, an 11 volume set of labor market data informed, career-contextualized adult literacy activities developed to meet requirements to address career content for all students.
Part 1: (Tuesday, May 26th from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m): Introduction to the CareerKits
In the initial webinar you will explore the CareerKits, become familiar with several literacy-based and numeracy-based career exploration lesson types, and build skills and strategies for developing and implementing career-contextualized instruction, including how to:
- Address reading, writing, math, critical thinking and research skills through career exploration activities
- Access career exploration activities across ten industry sectors, drawing on student interest
Part 2: (Friday, May 29th from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m): Deep Dive into Activities and Implementation Planning
The activity and debrief will allow participants the opportunity to focus on one or a few activities in detail, as students would, and consider making adaptations based on student need. Then participants will select activities from the CareerKits that they will incorporate into a career-focused implementation plan. Including how to:
- Identify and select career exploration activities in line with the academic objectives of classes
- Incorporate career exploration technology tools, such as MyNextMove and the Occupational Outlook Handbook
Part 3: (Thursday, June 4th from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m): Implementation Plan Share
In this interactive webinar, participants will share their implementation plans, including CareerKit activities they plan to use, how they will allocate the time for activities, “chunking” activities where necessary, for example, and any adaptations they plan to make. They may also include supplemental activities.
Time Commitment: 6 hours
The total time for this PD activity is approximately 6 hours. This PD event involves three activities and all are required to complete the PD.
