When teachers and advisors use career-contextualized materials and activities, students are exposed to a wide variety of career information while making progress toward their literacy, numeracy and critical thinking goals. Right now, students need additional skills to navigate changing labor markets and job opportunities. In this three part series, you will explore career-contextualized activities for online learning, research local labor market information, and identify career exploration activities. By the end of the series, you will have activities to use with students right away, and the skills to adapt activities based on student level and the local job market.

Session 1: (January 13, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. –11:30 p.m.): Contextualized Career Exploration Activities for Virtual Settings

You will explore foundational literacy-based career exploration activities that can be done in a remote setting. These activities focus on expanding student exposure to a wide variety of careers so they can identify career interests and values, while strengthening literacy skills. This labor market research can be used to develop curriculum or teach and advise directly with students who would benefit from learning how to research career interests and local career opportunities.

Session 2: (January 27, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. –11:30 p.m.): Labor Market Research Tools and Techniques: What jobs are available in my area?

You will learn how to help students research local labor markets using official sources, such as the Department of Labor as well as less formal sources, such as informational interviews with experienced workers.  You will also review activities to help students leverage professional associations for career information. These skills can become the basis for student assignments or can be used to gather background knowledge on the local job market and training opportunities. 

Session 3: (February 10, 2021 from 1:00 p.m. –2:30 p.m.): Career Exploration and Job Searching in a COVID World

You will explore teaching and advising activities that help students identify their career goals and job requirements. Additionally, you will adapt activities that help students identify their criteria for what makes a good job and assess potential jobs based on their criteria. We will conclude by reflecting on the three sessions and identifying your next steps for incorporating these resources into your teaching and advising practices.

Time Commitment: 7.5 hours

The total time for this PD activity is approximately 7.5 hours. This PD event involves three activities and all are required to complete the PD.

Session 1: January 13, 2021 10:00 am -11:30 pm

Session 2: January 27, 2021 10:00 am - 11:30 pm

Session 3: February 10, 2021 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Note: Your registration for the 1/13/20 session will automatically enroll you in session 2 and 3. All three sessions are required for participation.
