Thanks to our partnership with the New England Literacy Resource Center (NELRC), the SABES Program Support PD Center is pleased to invite Massachusetts adult educators to attend this NELRC three-part workshop series (online) to examine the way implicit racial bias surfaces in adult education, how it creates inequity for learners, and how you can constructively address this challenge.
In the first session, you will look at implicit bias—what it is, how to face it, and strategies for working constructively to change it.
In the second session, we address the goal of making your classroom more inclusive and relevant to all. You will learn about classroom materials and strategies designed to help you teach about equity in the context of basic skills.
In the third and final session, our NELRC colleagues will showcase programs that have made changes to make racial equity a key part of their practices.
Important Notes:
- These sessions are offered by NELRC, so please register here rather than via the SABES Calendar.
- The webinars take place on the last three Tuesdays in April (13, 20, and 27) from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

This professional development activity/course is designed for:
Session 1, Implicit Bias: April 13, 2021, 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Implicit bias shows up in all individuals, organizations, and institutions. This webinar will investigate how racial bias shows up in ourselves and in our field, and we will propose solutions—some short-term and some long-term.
Session 2, Classroom Strategies for Talking about Race: April 20, 2021, 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
In this interactive webinar, we will share ideas about how to use relevant, student-written content to help students understand topics like race, racism, inequity, and inequality; how to use this understanding to navigate their lives in the United States; and how these conversations can build stronger connections between students.
Riva Pearson, ESOL teacher at Jewish Vocational Service in Boston, will co-present this webinar.
Session 3, Action Steps for Programs and the Field Addressing Racial Equity: April 27, 2021, 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
In this webinar, we offer various steps that programs and the field can take to move toward equity in adult education. We will explore how you can use orientation and other program-wide policies and practices, along with hiring and staffing policies, to help you address equity. We will also investigate how we can advocate for changes in our field that will help reduce racial inequity.
In addition to Cynthia Peters, Carmine Stewart, PhD, will co-present this session. Dr. Stewart is the president and CEO of Aspire Consulting and Educational Services and vice president of programming at Seeds of Literacy in Cleveland, Ohio.
