Overview

Through two online sessions and a practical application, gain knowledge of multimedia approaches for creating content that engages your students, bringing history and science to life and helping them gain a deeper understanding of what they are studying.

Create a multimedia presentation for use in an web-based remote classroom, or embed multimedia components within a presentation for use in an un-connected in-person classroom such as within the Department of Corrections.

    This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ELA, social studies, science, or technology teachers and tutors of all levels
Description

Through multimedia, students can experience significant historic moments and explore documents, artifacts, and places. They can explore science through experiments, hands-on tools, and real life images. Studies have long shown that multi-sensory learning helps our brains remember information better than single-sensory learning and is in line with the theory of multiple intelligences.

All components must be completed in order to receive a total of 6 PD hours:

Two-hour Zoom session (1/14/22):

  • View and discuss three multimedia approaches that may be used to show information, in both in-person and online learning situations.

Three-week practicum:

  1. Use MS PowerPoint, MS Word, or Google Slides to draft a multimedia presentation of an historic event, person, document, artifact, or scientific concept for use with students.
  2. Post your presentation to Blackboard, or email it to the instructor.
  3. Email the instructor with any questions on difficult topics or challenges within the multimedia approaches. The instructor will investigate and present on the answers in the final session.
  4. Prepare to present your work in the final Zoom session.

Two-hour Zoom session (2/11/22):

  • Present your work, discuss your peers' presentations, and review any difficult topics or challenges that were identified.
  • View and discuss further creative resources for building interactive presentations with a variety of multimedia.
  • Experience advanced formats and tools.

    Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Explain three lesson approaches for incorporating multimedia into history or science
  • Recognize several ways to represent complex information using multimedia
  • Build an engaging lesson using multimedia as an assignment
  • Offer flexible lesson delivery (face-to-face or distance learning/remote learning) in your lesson
