Overview

The Curriculum for Adults Learning Math (CALM) was designed to give adult students a strong conceptual foundation in mathematics. Teachers who have worked with CALM know that it relies heavily on tactile manipulatives, visuals, and student collaboration and may feel very different (to both students and teachers) from the way they learned in school when they were younger. This online workshop series is intended to help teachers deepen their understanding of the content, teaching strategies, and overall organization of the CALM curriculum. Each support session will focus on a specific content topic. Participants will have a chance to experience CALM activities on that topic, reflect on CALM’s approach to teaching that topic, and share ideas and questions with other teachers.

While registrants are not required to attend a CALM Orientation and/or participate in the asynchronous CALM Introduction to participate in the CALM Support Series, we strongly encourage them to do so. The Support Series builds from the prior knowledge gained in the other CALM offerings. Participants will also have the opportunity to schedule follow up one-on-one coaching sessions with the facilitator, if desired.

    Audience

    This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ABE math teachers who are using or are interested in using the CALM curriculum
  • Limited to instructors and staff from Massachusetts adult education programs
Description

After building a foundation with benchmarks, CALM then goes on to develop conceptual understanding of operations with these numbers. This 90-minute virtual workshop will focus on the unifying theme of all of those units, the idea that operations with fractions, decimals, and percents all build on an understanding of operations with whole numbers.  You will participate in a CALM activity involving multiplication of fractions and reflect on what is true about multiplication for any type of numbers.

    Learning Objectives

    Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Facilitate a number string activity
  • Explore different ways of interpreting and visualizing multiplication with fractions
  • Explain how operations with fractions, decimals, and percents build on understanding operations with whole numbers (coherence)
  • Get support and share best practices with other teachers

Prerequisites
