Overview

This session will introduce participants to ten effective strategies for introducing civic literacy into the adult ESOL classroom. This is a repeat of the session offered last spring.

Description

Civic literacy provides adult ESOL learners with a fundamental understanding of what is needed to participate in U.S democracy and what their rights and obligations are as citizens and residents. This foundation is critical to their civic efficacy and civic engagement. Participants will be provided with ten effective strategies, aligned with the civics standards in the MA ELPS, for introducing civic literacy into the adult ESOL classroom, as well as concrete examples, best practices, and pertinent handouts with ideas and resources. A later session in January, 2022 will focus on the perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors associated with civic efficacy and engagement. 

    Learning Objectives

    Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the key concepts of civic literacy, civic engagement, and civic efficacy
  • Explain how civic literacy and related language development contribute to adult immigrants’ societal participation
  • Adopt and adapt strategies, resources, and tools presented to incorporate civic literacy to your adult ESOL learning environment
