This interactive three-session virtual workshop introduces adult ESOL teachers to the craft of storytelling through an experiential process of developing their own personal narrative with an eye toward teaching students the craft. Participants will have the opportunity to share their stories and begin to consider how they will integrate storytelling into their ESOL instruction.

- ESOL teachers who are interested in learning about storytelling in order to more effectively teach this skill to their intermediate to advanced level adult English learners
This professional development activity/course is designed for:
Everyone has a story to tell. Storytelling is a skill that can be developed and a tool that can be used effectively in the ESOL classroom. Developed and used purposefully, storytelling can contribute to inclusion and connection; language skill development; and learner engagement, motivation, and agency.
In this workshop series, English language teachers will first learn the elements of a compelling story and apply these elements to craft a personal story of their own. The workshop will include three interactive sessions. The first two sessions will be facilitated by Cheryl Hamilton, who is the creator and former director of Suitcase Stories® , a series that features stories of refugee and immigrant life, as well as the curator and storytelling coach for the national media program Stories from the Stage. In the final session, facilitated by Laura Porter of the SABES ESOL PD Center, participants will be invited to share their stories with one another. The first workshop is a prerequisite for attending Part 2 of the storytelling series, Teaching the Craft of Storytelling to Adult English Language Learners, which will provide effective tools and strategies for guiding ESOL students in crafting and sharing their stories.
