Overview

This three-session virtual workshop builds on the prerequisite, Craft a Compelling Story to Tell and Teach, and focuses on tools and strategies teachers can use to guide English language learners in creating and sharing compelling stories that will also develop their language skills and promote engagement, interaction, and agency.

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ESOL teachers who are interested in learning about storytelling in order to more effectively teach this skill to their intermediate to advanced level adult English learners
Description

There is much research supporting the value of storytelling in second language development. In addition to offering learners opportunities to work on specific language skills (e.g., writing, speaking, reading, and listening), storytelling encourages learner engagement, boosts motivation, promotes social interactions, and fosters learner voice and agency.

This blended PD course earning beyond understanding the elements of effective storytelling by equipping participants with effective skills and techniques to share with English learners. Participants will attend a series of three virtual sessions, spaced three weeks apart to provide time to apply their learning in their own classes between each meeting. In between sessions, participants will have guided assignments and reflective activities, with the goal of developing student stories over the course of the series. This series will be facilitated by Cheryl Hamilton, who is the creator and former director of Suitcase Stores®, a series that features stories of refugee and immigrant life, as well as the curator and storytelling coach for the national media program Stories from the Stage.
