In this two-part blended workshop presented by the Boston Debate League, learn to promote evidence-based argumentation and reasoning skills at multiple levels of instruction to adult learners, including English learners.
- ABE and ESOL instructors of adult learners with low-intermediate to higher English skills, teaching classes with at least 10 students at a time, and who are interested in growing their "toolkit" of activities to support student-to-student discourse in their classes.
This professional development activity/course is designed for:
Gain firsthand experience using a variety of resources developed by the Boston Debate League to inspire students' reasoning skills, cultivate the ability to make and support claims with text-based evidence, build strong arguments, and develop language skills. All of these skills are necessary for college readiness and civic participation.
In the first session, learn to use two activities designed to promote discourse and support vocabulary development through analysis of images. In the second session, learn to use two additional activities designed to expand understanding of texts, including one literacy and one informational text.
Participants will first experience the activities as learners, and then focus on how to use them with their own classes, instructional materials, and learning objectives.
- Identify the key elements of strong arguments
- Adapt instructional activities to promote students' discourse and reasoning skills
- Develop activities from visual and written texts to encourage students' ability to build strong arguments
- Integrate debate and argumentation activities into ABE and ESOL lessons
