Explore two effective strategies for teaching students how to write constructed responses. The presenter shows how to use The Change Agent, a relevant, engaging student-written publication, both as a text that learners can deconstruct and analyze for meaning and as a model for their own writing.

Description

The Change Agent, an online magazine published three times yearly, features writings by adult learners and emphasizes civic participation and social justice. The Editor, Cynthia Peters, will use this engaging and relevant resource to lead practitioners through two strategies adult learners can use to write constructed responses: (1) deconstructing and citing evidence from a text to understand and restate the author’s meaning and (2) analyzing models for constructing texts in response to writing prompts.

Participants will go through some of the steps to writing a constructed response, including clarifying what a writing prompt is asking; finding and citing evidence from a text to support one’s response; making writing choices; and writing a conclusion. They will practice with writing prompts from The Change Agent’s Call for Articles, so that they can later work with learners on writing for an authentic audience and potentially for publication.
