ELL students and teacher use math manipulatives
Overview

Most adult education programs have English learners (ELs) in their adult basic education (ABE) courses. These ELs, like their native English-speaking classmates, are often working toward their HiSET or other education and career goals. This online course is designed help adult education instructors teach math to ELs more effectively and in a culturally respectful manner. The strategies and ideas presented in this course are also appropriate for adult ESOL instructors as well as ABE instructors who only have native English speakers in their classes.

Priority is given to Massachusetts teachers. Registrants from other states will be placed on a waitlist and will be enrolled if space is available.

Description

This asynchronous, self-paced online course consists of five learning modules and a short assessment. It is possible to work through all modules in one sitting, but we encourage you to complete one module at a time. Carefully reflect on your own personal experiences vis-à-vis what you’ve learned in each module. The estimated time to complete this course is five hours, not including the final assessment. All modules and the final assessment must be completed to earn professional development credit in LACES. You will have three weeks from the start date of the course section to complete all requirements.

The modules are:

  • Module 1: Guiding Principles
  • Module 2: Implicit Bias
  • Module 3: The Answer Is Still the Same
  • Module 4: Language
  • Module 5: Math Tasks
  • Module 6: Assessment

Please note: About one week before the event, registrants will receive a separate email from the SABES Math Team at TERC (sherry_soares@terc.edu) with instructions on how to access the course.  

    Learning Objectives

    Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Apply five guiding principles to teaching English learners in the math classroom
  • Examine your own biases and the impact they might have on teaching and learning
  • Better understand different algorithms for computation and why they work
  • Apply strategies for managing language acquisition and errors
