The Curriculum for Adults Learning Math (CALM) was designed to give adult students a strong conceptual foundation in mathematics. Teachers who have worked with CALM know that it relies heavily on tactile manipulatives, visuals, and student collaboration and may feel very different (to both students and teachers) from the way they learned in school when they were younger. This online workshop series is intended to help teachers deepen their understanding of the content, teaching strategies, and overall organization of the CALM curriculum. Each support session will focus on a specific content topic. Participants will have a chance to experience CALM activities on that topic, reflect on CALM’s approach to teaching that topic, and share ideas and questions with other teachers.
While registrants are not required to attend a CALM Orientation and/or participate in the asynchronous CALM Introduction to participate in the CALM Support Series, we strongly encourage them to do so. The Support Series builds from the prior knowledge gained in the other CALM offerings. Participants will also have the opportunity to schedule follow up one-on-one coaching sessions with the facilitator, if desired.
**This event is open to Massachusetts teachers only.**
- ABE math teachers who are using or are interested in using the CALM curriculum
- Limited to instructors and staff from Massachusetts adult education programs
This professional development activity/course is designed for:
This 90-minute virtual workshop will explore CALM activities from early units that use concrete methods to help students develop strategies for working with ratios. Proportional reasoning involves working with relationships between quantities (ratios), and is a crucial foundation for higher level concepts that appear throughout CALM. You will experience the progression from concrete to representational to abstract as you draw ratios, describe patterns, and connect those patterns to numerical rules and strategies.
About a week before the event, registrants will receive a separate email from the SABES Math team at TERC (sherry_soares@terc.edu) with instructions on how to access the Zoom session.
- Identify and explain the advantages of an open question
- Explain the core concepts students need to understand about proportional reasoning
- Explain the progression of proportional reasoning strategies and how they prepare students for later topics in CALM
- Get support and share best practices with other teachers
Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:
None, although attending a CALM Introduction (online, asynchronous) or Orientation (Face-to-face) is strongly encouraged.
