In this two-hour interactive Zoom session, ESOL instructors explore ways to transfer and transform effective, evidence-based, and engaging in-person instructional routines (i.e. regularly employed high leverage practices) to the virtual learning environment.
- ESOL instructors of all language proficiency levels

In this highly interactive workshop on Zoom, you will explore several effective instructional routines that readily transfer from the in-person to the virtual classroom on computers and Smartphones. During the session, you will identify how instructional routines support your ESOL learners’ language development and how the remote environment can transform those routines into opportunities for even greater skill development including digital literacy. The routine use of evidence-based activities and tasks ensures that learners develop language strategies and critical thinking, collaboration and other essential skills. You and your colleagues will explore these routines and Zoom tools:
- Gathering and reporting data (using views and polls)
- Brainstorming, categorizing and ranking information (using the chat and whiteboard)
- Small group discussions (using breakout rooms)
You will have the opportunity to use a planning template and collaborate with colleagues teaching the same ESOL level to adapt one of the routines for your learners.
- Identify ways to use Zoom views, polls, chat, and whiteboard to engage students and enhance English language learning and digital literacy
- Adapt one or more instructional routines for your students using basic Zoom features
- Apply strategies in Zoom breakout rooms to increase learners’ language development and provide opportunities for collaboration
