cover of geometry CUNY math packet
Overview

Whether it's from a distance or face-to-face, we are all looking for ways to support our students. The City University of New York (CUNY) has developed remote learning packets on different topics for adult educators to use with students studying for high school equivalency at a distance and in person. These free packets are designed to be completed by students independently, reinforcing related classroom instruction. This webinar will introduce you to a geometry packet, Rigid Transformations: Shapes on a Plane (Part 1). Many Desmos Classroom Activities support the same concepts in the packets and can provide the basis of classroom instruction.

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ABE teachers and administrators at all levels of math ability and comfort
Description

The math content in Rigid Transformations: Shapes on a Plane (Part 1) is appropriate for learners at the intermediate level, approximately CCRSAE Math levels C and D. This workshop will show some of the supporting activities and Desmos Classroom Activities that helped students of slightly lower levels in completing the packet. The materials are designed to give learners the opportunity to explore the math concepts involved and apply them to real-life situations (similar to the design of the CALM curriculum). Because the materials contain explanatory text, students should also have an intermediate to advanced level of reading.

All the CUNY Fast Track GRASP Math Packets are available online at http://www.collectedny.org/indexftgmp/.

Please note: About one week before the event, registrants will receive a separate email from sherry_soares@terc.edu from the SABES Math Team at TERC with instructions on how to access the Zoom session.

    Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Become familiar with the CUNY Fast Track GRASP Math Packets as a resource
  • Consider how to use Rigid Transformations: Shapes on a Plane (Part 1) to structure remote math instruction
  • Consider Classroom Activities from Desmos that can be offered during online instruction (such as over video conferencing) to support the concepts of the packet
