This two-part series provides instructors and advisors with the tools and strategies they need to incorporate labor market and career exploration into curricula, lessons, or advising workshops. Adult education programs are required to use knowledge of the labor market to inform their instruction and advising, equipping students with the tools they need to navigate a rapidly evolving job market. But how can advisors and teachers best support each other in getting this done? Session 1 focuses on the tools and strategies instructors and advisors need, while session 2 will focus on sharing the workshops and lessons you will have developed.
Please note: The work in this series is to be done with at least one advisor and one instructor from a program. Please plan to sign up together. If you are the only one from your program attending, you will reach out to a colleague to complete the in-between session work.

This professional development activity/course is designed for:
We know that all students should be engaging in exploration of careers and learning about the labor market and high-growth sectors. Yet, it is not always clear if this is the job of the instructor or the advisor. Join this series to learn about how to access the data, ways to contextualize, and collaborative models to make working together easy and beneficial to both parties.
Session 1: We will share where to access relevant labor market sources, and how to turn data into contextualized language and literacy building activities. Participants will review sample lessons and activities that incorporate labor market information as inspiration for creating their own activities to try with students. In addition to a focus on using labor market information with students, we will dive into ways that teachers and advisors can collaborate inside and outside of the classroom.
Between session work: Instructors and advisors will develop a learning segment of their choosing that incorporates the data and activities we explored in Session 1. Collaboration can follow three models: Teachers and advisors develop activities together but deliver separately; develop and deliver together; or, develop and present independently, but reflect and debrief together. Ideally, participants will implement this learning segment with students prior to Session 2.
Session 2: Participants share the process of developing the learning segment, the experience facilitating it, and what challenges and successes came up along the way. Participants receive feedback and support from the facilitator and their peers on the segment, implementation, and collaborative process.

The total time for this PD is estimated at 6 to 7 hours
Session 1: January 18th, 2023 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. (1.5 hours)
In-between work: Estimated at 3 to 4 hours
Session 2: February 15th, 2023 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. (1.5 hours)
