This two-hour Zoom session focuses on using the Gradual Release of Responsibility for ESOL instruction in the virtual learning environment, promoting learner autonomy, digital resilience, and learner voice and choice.
Please note: This course will take place in Blackboard where you will find all virtual session information, course materials, and additional resources. You cannot access the online course from the SABES website. You will receive a separate email one to two days before the course begins with instructions on how to access the Zoom session. - ESOL instructors of all language proficiency levels
- ESOL instructors with a Zoom account and a basic understanding of the Zoom platform (see prerequisites below)
This professional development activity/course is designed for:
In this interactive, Zoom workshop, you will use the Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) approach (I do, We do, You all do, You do) to increase learners’ confidence in tackling complex tasks in the virtual learning environment and help them connect their classwork to their workplace, civic, and personal goals. You and your colleagues will collaborate to categorize lesson activities into the GRR stages. You will also identify which learning tasks and educational technology (ed tech) tools integrate language development strategies, 21st century skills, and digital resilience.
Using a “choice board” approach that takes your learners’ level and interests into consideration, you will apply the GRR approach to a lesson topic and determine how learners will:
- Engage with and explore the lesson content
- Practice skills and strategies
- Demonstrate and assess their learning

- Plan remote instruction using the GRR approach
- Use “whole-class” learning routines that support learners’ access to the lesson content while fostering their digital literacy and resilience
- Use breakout rooms and selected ed tech tools to increase learner engagement and provide intentional instruction in language strategies, digital skills, and 21st century skills (interpersonal, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills)
