The Educator Growth and Effectiveness (EGE) model is a teacher-centered, six-step process supported by ACLS and SABES to improve teachers’ professional practice and help them become as effective as possible at helping students achieve their academic, career, and life goals.
ACLS supports the use of EGE to meet its MA Policies for Effective Adult Education in Community Adult Learning Centers and Correctional Institutions requirement that programs “create and sustain the conditions that enable powerful teaching and learning to occur” with “effective, self-reflective teachers dedicated to improving teaching practice and achieving student outcomes.”
The EGE online course begins with the EGE Overview Module. Once you complete this prerequisite, you will select the module specific to your role:
- EGE for Directors/Team Leaders
- EGE for Teachers
- EGE for Coaches

This professional development activity/course is designed for:
EGE PD includes the following components:
- Module 1: The EGE Overview (prerequisite for everyone)
- Module 2: Customized based on your role: Director/Team Leader, Teacher, or Coach
- Monthly community of practice (CoP) meetings (optional) for directors (or the EGE team leaders they designate) to share questions, strategies, challenges, and progress
- Program-based coaching, available upon request

- EGE Overview: Opens on 1/30 (2 hours)
- Note: Required before taking other modules
- Role-specific Modules: 1/30–2/28 (take one)
- EGE for Directors/Team Leaders: (4 hours)
- EGE for Teachers: (4 hours)

- EGE Monthly CoP Meetings for Team Leaders (optional, online)
- February 9: 1:00 p.m.–2:00 p.m.
- March 9: 1:00 p.m.–2:00 p.m.

- Note: Content-based CoPs for coaches will be available through the ESOL, ELA, and Math Curriculum and Instruction PD Centers
How to Register: By registering for this first EGE Overview course, you are automatically registered for all other EGE sessions.
- Explain the six steps of the EGE model and its potential to support teacher development
- Consider your program’s readiness and options for implementation according to your program’s resources and needs
- Teachers: Identify a rigorous and realistic professional learning goal that focuses on both instruction and learner outcomes and that takes into account your self-assessment, student data, and program priorities
- Teachers: Develop a professional learning plan that outlines steps toward the goal and lists related evidence of progress that should be collected and reviewed
- Team Leaders: Consider your program options for implementation and coordinate the resources neeeded to implement the steps of the EGE cycle
- Team Leaders: Identify and appropriately match coaches with teachers
- Coaches: Describe the role and qualifications of an effective EGE coach
- Coaches: Identify key coaching skills and processes and provide effective coaching for EGE teachers
