Most adult education programs have English learners (ELs) in their adult basic education (ABE) courses. These ELs, like their native English-speaking classmates, are often working toward their HiSET or other education and career goals. This online course is designed help adult education instructors teach math to ELs more effectively and in a culturally respectful manner. The strategies and ideas presented in this course are also appropriate for adult ESOL instructors as well as ABE instructors who only have native English speakers in their classes.

This asynchronous, self-paced online course consists of five learning modules and a short assessment. It is possible to work through all modules in one sitting, but we encourage you to complete one module at a time. Carefully reflect on your own personal experiences vis-à-vis what you’ve learned in each module. The estimated time to complete this course is five hours, not including the final assessment. All modules and the final assessment must be completed to earn professional development credit in LACES. You will have three weeks from the start date of the course section to complete all requirements.
