Proportional reasoning goes well beyond teaching how to cross-multiply. It involves identifying patterns and looking for relationships between information. It is connected to thinking about the places in which adults apply proportional reasoning in their everyday lives using a variety of strategies that are familiar, make sense, and are deeply grounded in mathematical properties. This workshop provides teachers with an opportunity to explore the connections between those strategies and properties using robust tools and resources that can immediately be used in the classroom.
- ABE math teachers who want to learn how to teach proportional reasoning in context and with concrete and visual tools
This professional development activity/course is designed for:
This 90-minute virtual workshop will explore activities that use concrete methods to help students develop strategies for working with ratios. Proportional reasoning involves working with relationships between quantities (ratios) and is a crucial foundation for higher level math concepts. You will experience the progression from concrete to representational to abstract as you draw ratios, describe patterns, and connect those patterns to numerical rules and strategies. Participants will also have the opportunity to schedule follow-up one-on-one coaching sessions with the facilitator, if desired.
This workshop may be bundled with other CALM-related SABES math PD to earn Professional Development Points (PDPs). Read the Earning CALM PDPs document for more information.
About a week before the event, registrants will receive a separate email from the SABES Math team at TERC (sherry_soares@terc.edu) with instructions on how to access the Zoom session.
- Identify and explain the advantages of an open question
- Explain the core concepts students need to understand about proportional reasoning
- Explain the progression of proportional reasoning strategies and how they prepare students for topics connected to linear functions
