Slow Reveal Maps (Geography for Justice)
Slow Reveal Map sequences use maps to explore data in historical and geographic contexts. Each sequence begins with elements hidden so the map is simplified and accessible to all learners. Then step by step, the hidden layers of the map are revealed, giving students space for sense-making. The sequences help students develop (1) statistical literacy, (2) their ability to read data in maps, and (3) background knowledge in US history, especially as it connects to social justice. Students experience math in social studies and science contexts, which is something they will face on HSE exams.
Slow Reveal Maps were inspired by a similar instructional routine called Slow Reveal Graphs. Learn more about the Slow Reveal Graph instructional routine at https://www.collectedny.org/frameworkposts/slow-reveal-graphs/.
