three professions that require measurement skills
Overview

Have you ever considered how often we incorporate measurement into our lives without even realizing it? From estimating how long it will take to run an errand, to guessing if the milk in the refrigerator is enough for a recipe, we apply our reasoning to the measurement of time, distance, and volume all the time without any expensive scientific instruments. However, there are situations when we must be more precise in our measurements, especially in careers like nursing, engineering, and public health that require knowledge of trade tools that use intervals and symbols.

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ABE and HSE teachers who teach about measurement in context, especially in professions like those in MassSTEP careers like nursing, culinary arts, machinists, machinery/engineering, and wastewater treatment
Description

In this 3-hour, in-person workshop, you will engage in hands-on station activities that focus on measurement using various instruments, all of which can be replicated for multiple workforce contexts. We’ll unpack ways these activities could be modified for different populations, settings, or workforce interests. We’ll also examine the prior math knowledge that may be needed to support learners, as well as ways to differentiate the tasks to make the station activity experience accessible to everyone. We’ll end by reviewing the resources, materials, and lesson plans provided with the workshop to support contexts that work with measurement.

    Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Facilitate a notice and wonder warmup
  • Facilitate a measurement station activity
  • Connect classroom measurement activities to workplace contexts
