Brief Job Description:

The Education and Career Advisor will work with ESOL and HiSET students at JMCC.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Do you want to help adult learners achieve their goals? Jackson Mann Community Center’s Adult Education program is looking for a full-time Education and Career Advisor for the 2024-2025 school year. The Education and Career Advisor will work with adult ESOL and GED/HiSET students. The hours are Monday through Thursday from 1:00 to 9:00 pm at the Jackson Mann Community Center and three hours of remote work on Friday. Responsibilities:

  • Working with students to set up individual career and educational plans and making initial goals, with continual follow-up meetings to monitor student progress. 
  • Addressing stability services for students which include WIC, housing, healthcare, childcare, counseling, domestic violence, tax services, and anything that can help advance the economic and psychological stability of the student.
  • The ability to keep up to date with what is happening in the field in regard to DESE, WIOA, and workplace education.
  • Reporting any major obstacles to success for students to the Director.
  • Exploring new ties and deepening relationships with community colleges and job training programs.
  • Responsible for data entry in LACES, keeping accurate records.
  • Liaison with the Director and teachers when needed in working with student issues and academic concerns.
  • Support outreach to the Allston/Brighton community about the program.
  • Administer intake and placement tests of new students.
  • Administer BEST Plus 2.0, TABE CLAS-E, or other assessments.
  • Administer the Chromebook lending program
  • Complete 35 hours of professional development per year.
  • Contact students who have left the program to conduct follow-up surveys.
  • File all required student documentation.
  • Help students create and revise a resume, assist with job applications and job interview practice as needed.
  • Develop and deliver workshops to students (education, career, community resources, mental health, etc.)
  • Host Student Council meetings and offer workshops on community engagement. 
  • Assist in organizing cultural field trips.
  • Teach an ESOL or GED class if a substitute is not available
  • Assist with grant writing and related responsibilities
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess most of the qualifications listed below.  

  • Ability to take initiative, prioritize work, and be highly organized.
  • Understanding of the immigrant experience in the U.S.
  • Ability to guide with resume writing, interviewing skills, and basic job preparation
  • Serves as an advocate for students who need specific services.
  • Excellent written and oral communication. Positive team spirit. 
  • Comfortable teaching classes and leading workshops.
  • Must function independently and as a member of a team.
  • Experience with academic advising. 
  • Excellent technology skills
  • Proficient use of Google Suite. 
  • Familiarity with Monday.com is a plus.
  • Fluent in a second language. Spanish, Portuguese or Haitian Creole preferred.
  • Education:  Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Counseling, or a similar degree preferred. 
  • Experience with LACES is a plus.
  • Certified in BEST Plus 2.0 or TABE CLAS-E a plus.
  • CORI check required by Boston Center for Youth and Families.

The Jackson Mann Community Center is a community-based non-profit service agency incorporated in 1976 to provide educational, cultural, social, recreational, and community services to moderate and low-income residents of Allston-Brighton, ages 2.9 to older adulthood.
