Overview

Facilitate independent student learning with ePortfolios (electronic portfolios)! Encourage your students to take ownership of their learning while developing critical digital skills along the way. This workshop will equip you with the tools and knowledge to use ePortfolios in your classroom. You will also build your own ePortfolio to model this practice and inspire your students.

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • Instructors and other program staff who use online tools for teaching
Description

This offering is part of our EdTech Sandbox series. Each EdTech Sandbox session is an opportunity to get to know and play with digital tools and resources that support your work and your students' learning.

The theme of this EdTech Sandbox session is facilitating independent student learning through ePortfolios. An ePortfolio is a website that is created and controlled by students for sharing their work from your course. This transformational learning tool allows your students to go deeper in their learning, reflect on what they know, demonstrate what they have learned, and build ownership of their learning and ideas.

Additionally, ePortfolios offer a valuable alternative to housing student work solely within a learning management system (LMS). Unlike an LMS, which students may lose access to after a term ends, ePortfolios enable students to share their work beyond the confines of a single course. This flexibility encourages students to create projects that truly reflect their interests and goals, rather than solely focusing on fulfilling instructor expectations.

To support effective implementation of ePortfolios in your classroom, we will review the components of an ePortfolio, discuss different digital tools that can be used to build one, and you will construct your own ePortfolio to serve as a model to share with your students.

It is recommended that participants have a Google account, as certain ePortfolio tools utilized in this session will require this. Specific digital skills that participants will use during this course include:

  • Using Zoom engagement and presentation features, including chat and screen share
  • Creating an account with a new tool
  • Commenting on and adding to a collaborative Padlet

Course Format: The course is online facilitated over Zoom and is designed to be hands-on.

Course Requirements: To complete the course, you must attend the 1.5-hour session.

Extending Your Learning: After the course, you will continue to have access to course materials and ongoing conversation through an EdTech Sandbox Canvas page. We welcome you to extend your learning by building on the project that you will start during this session and by sharing your work and questions with your colleagues in Canvas.

Course Access & Support: Before the course opens, registrants will receive an email with instructions on how to access the synchronous session via Zoom and any asynchronous materials via Canvas. You will receive a Zoom link to access this course from Jane Brandt. If you need technical assistance or have questions about accessing the course, please contact Jane at jane_brandt@worlded.org.
