To use this tool:
- Follow the numbered tasks in the left column in order. In the right column you will see tips and resources associated with each task that can help you drill down into the essential pieces of the task. Explore the resources that are hyperlinked to access valuable guidance and examples.
- Chunk and space out the tasks into manageable units of work. You are likely busy with other duties related to your position, so don't try to take on too much at a time. We suggest focusing on just one task every 2-3 weeks. That will keep you from becoming overwhelmed and keep you moving through to completion of the unit design process.
- Work with a partner or a team. This can be other teachers in your program, your directors, and/or a SABES ELA coach. Having someone else to bounce ideas off regularly can improve the final product and lighten the load!
- Be prepared to revisit and revise sections of the unit plan you completed in earlier tasks. As you move through the template, your vision for the unit will likely become more and more refined, leading to tweaks or maybe outright transformations of previous sections. That’s a good thing! And spacing out your work on the unit will also allow time for new ideas and solutions to surface so that, by the end, you have created a robust unit that maximizes learning for your adult learners.
