How can adult education teachers make English-Language Arts (ELA) lessons both engaging and rigorous for learners?  In this two-session event, participants will discover how incorporating the principles of culturally responsive teaching can be the key to unlocking deeper learning and higher engagement in ELA instruction.

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ABE English Language Arts teachers of all levels
Description

Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT), when used effectively, can ignite learning and create rich, rigorous learning experiences for adult students, many of whom come from diverse backgrounds. English Language Arts (ELA) teachers need to acquire knowledge of foundational CRT concepts along with practical strategies for incorporating them into their ELA practice. In this two-session course, we will explore the principles of culturally responsive teaching and make connections to adult students’ learning experiences and outcomes. Participants will leave with tools, resources, and a practical process for using a culturally responsive approach to enrich ELA teaching and learning.

Participants should come prepared to share and engage with their ELA colleagues in group discussions and breakout room activities. Between sessions, participants are expected to complete approximately two hours of independent work.

Upon completion of both sessions and the interim activities, participants will receive five PD hours.

Professional Standards addressed: P1, C1
